How Faith As Small As a Mustard Seed Can Move Mountains

This is how faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. The mustard seed is spoken of often in Scripture. It was the smallest of their seeds, yet it grew to be the tallest of their plants in their gardens.

It refers to the kingdom of heaven in several verses. The Kingdom of heaven started small but grew rapidly as more and more people obeyed the gospel.

Some think that the kingdom has not come yet but in Matthew 16:28, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, and there is some standing here who will not experience death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Either the kingdom has come or we have some very old people still alive since Christ was on earth.

In Colossians 1:13, Paul said that God had delivered us from the kingdom of darkness and transformed us to the kingdom of his dear son.

Jesus will take the saved to heaven when he returns, but the kingdom now exists on earth. Faith as small as mustard seed that continues to grow will move us to be on this journey to glory land.

In Luke 17:5-7 the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”

The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to the mulberry tree, “Be pulled out by the roots and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you. Since there is no example in Scripture of this being done, it is probable that the Lord was using a figure of speech to explain the power of faith.

This name, as well as sycamore, is given, among us, to the large tree commonly called the buttonwood; but the tree here mentioned is different. The Latin Vulgate and the Syria versions translate it “mulberry-tree.” It is said to have been a tree that commonly grew in Egypt, of the size and appearance of a mulberry-tree, but bearing a species of figs. This tree was common in Palestine.

Some think that since Jesus had given the apostles the power to perform miracles, that he was merely reminding them of their new found powers. In Matthew 17:20 it was a mountain that faith of a mustard seed could move. In the previous verse his disciples had been unable to cast out a demon from a person. They had asked why, and Jesus replied it was because of their lack of faith.

The trees and the mountains mentioned are probably referring to our personal obstacles that seem like mountains to overcome. He had given the apostles power to perform miracles, and he gave each of us the ability to do what is necessary to earn a living and fit in to society. These verses are informing us that we should believe in our own ability. Those with low self esteem lack the faith to believe in the ability that their creator gave them.

Faith is necessary to accomplish anything. Faith in God comes from hearing or believing in the word of God. The more you study it, the more faith you have. Faith in your own ability comes from doing. The more you do the more faith in your ability you have. The more faith in God you have, the more you should believe in your own abilities.

The Lord does not create junk but individuals with amazing ability. You have to decide to take a crack at whatever you desire. Start with small things and gradually work your way up to your personal obstacles that seems like mountains. As your passion begins to move your faith, you will discover your true ability. Act like you have great ability and it will come true.

After hearing the Lord say that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, then enter into the kingdom, they asked, “Then who can be saved.” He replied that this is impossible for mere humans, but with God, all things are possible. It is futile to try to judge our faith. Just trust God and do the best you can. The book, “Climbing the Heavenly Stairs” was written to answer questions of how to be acceptable to God. It is simple enough for beginners and deep enough for those familiar with the word.
